SHAH ALAM - The excitement surrounding the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) Congress elections for the 2025-2029 term is reaching its peak, as today marks the final date for affiliate members to submit their nomination forms.

The anticipation has been fueled by hopes that new candidates will step forward to contest key positions, including the coveted FAM Presidency.

However, this year's congress is not without its share of controversy.

Allegations of fraud in the nomination forms submitted by football association representatives and the suspension of some affiliate members have cast a shadow over the process.

Former FAM Deputy President, Datuk Seri Redzuan Sheikh Ahmad expressed his hope for a smooth election process leading up to Feb 15, the scheduled date for the congress.

“As we approach the deadline for submitting nomination forms, many controversies arise, disrupting the election process to some extent.

"Nevertheless, I hope the entire congress process proceeds smoothly and successfully selects the most suitable candidates. These individuals will form a key management team to propel the association forward over the next five years,” he said.

FAM has set Jan 16 as the final deadline for affiliates to submit their nomination forms, with the official list of candidates expected to be announced by the end of the month.

The screening of candidates will involve collaboration with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Malaysian Department of Insolvency and the police to ensure transparency and accountability.

Redzuan also emphasised the need for a complete reform within FAM, urging the introduction of fresh leadership to steer Malaysian football towards success.

“I hope there will be contests for all key positions. After years of underperformance in football, this is a necessary step. It is time for new faces with practical ideas to bring about drastic changes and lead the nation to football success,” he added.
