Enforcement officers taking bribes endanger public lives - Rasuah Busters
The misconduct of the officers involved could lead to more dangerous accidents, ultimately jeopardising public well-being.
SHAH ALAM - Every enforcement officer is urged not to compromise the interests and safety of road users for the sake of money.
Selangor, Federal Territories and Putrajaya Gabungan Rasuah Busters chairman Professor Dr Hamdan Daniel M Sharib said that this issue should not be taken lightly as it involves the lives of the public.
He said the misconduct of the officers involved could lead to more dangerous accidents, ultimately jeopardising public well-being.
Therefore, he emphasised that all officers must uphold the value of integrity in carrying out their duties to protect public interests.
“Do not gamble with the interests and safety of road users by approving inspections through bribery without conducting the proper checks.
“We cannot take such matters lightly as the consequences affect public interest and lives,” he said when contacted by Sinar on Sunday.
Previously, it was reported that a man suspected of being involved in a bribery case related to the inspection of heavy vehicles at the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) was remanded on Saturday.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), in a statement, said the 40-year-old man was detained following a strategic collaboration between the commission and the Road Transport Department (RTD).
Meanwhile, Hamdan said that such incidents could erode public trust in Puspakom’s inspection system, which was supposed to ensure road user safety.
“This matter needs to be taken seriously and the government should adopt more proactive or drastic measures.
“Among other steps is improving the existing administration by ensuring that officers performing their duties are not exposed to corruption,” he added.
