300kg of cocaine intercepted at Malta Freeport

VALLETTA - Some 300 kilogrammes of cocaine in a container at Malta Freeport had been intercepted, the Malta Customs said in a statement on Monday.

The substance, intercepted on Sunday evening, was in 300 blocks packed in a dry container that was in transhipment.

This year was rather busy for the Malta Customs, with 2,148 kilogrammes of cocaine and 4,774 kilogrammes of cannabis resin and cannabinoids seized.

In November alone, some 246 kilogrammes of cocaine were intercepted.

A total 146 kilogrammes of cocaine had been found hidden in a container transporting sacks of unperforated buttons.

That shipment had an estimated street value of 20 million euros (20.8 million U.S. dollars).

Later that month, the authorities seized another 100 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine having a street value of 14 million euros. (1 euro = 1.04 U.S. dollar). - XINHUA
