KOTA KINABALU - It’s that magical time of year when Sabah's shopping malls transform into dazzling wonderlands, each competing to outshine the other with creative Christmas displays.

Three iconic malls-IMAGO Shopping Mall, Suria Sabah, and 1Borneo Hypermall-have taken centre stage, enchanting visitors with their grand festive decorations that exude joy and togetherness.

The displays have even gone viral on social media.

At IMAGO Shopping Mall, 29-year-old teacher Amber Nee Jirin and her family were captivated by the centre court, which has become a kaleidoscope of colour and light.

A towering Christmas tree adorned with shimmering ornaments and cascading fairy lights anchors the scene.

Around it, an elaborate winter village unfolds, complete with a fountain, chalets, faux snow, and cheerful Christmas icons. The air is filled with the scent of cinnamon from a nearby Christmas market offering bread and Christmas biscuits.

"This place feels like a Christmas postcard come to life. It’s not just about the decorations-it’s the effort they’ve put into making everyone feel the spirit of Christmas. My children love this,” Amber Nee said.

IMAGO Shopping Mall, in a statement said the festive atmosphere is a key part of their Christmas event, A Joyful Celebration, held in conjunction with the Malaysia Year-End Sale 2024 in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia.

"IMAGO Shopping Mall, known for its innovative and inclusive events, continues to deliver exceptional experiences for visitors.

This year’s Christmas celebration transforms the centre court into a picturesque Christmas Town, blending festive joy with meaningful economic contributions and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all,” the mall stated.

The mall invites everyone to experience the festive magic of A Joyful Celebration, which runs until Jan 1.

Highlights include Daily Light Shows at 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm, and 7 pm, as well as Daily Christmas Dance Performances at 11 am and 9 pm.

Meanwhile, Suria Sabah has combined the themes of Christmas and Chinese New Year in a vibrant display that seamlessly blends the essence of both festive seasons into a visually stunning experience.

Visitors are greeted by an extraordinary scene: Santa Claus and the God of Wealth standing shoulder to shoulder at the entrance.

Twinkling lights, oversized ornaments, and intricate red lanterns cascade from the ceilings, reflecting Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity.

Amanda Liew, 32, a teacher, described the atmosphere as magical.

"The cheerful Christmas jingles intertwine with the rhythmic beats of Chinese drums, creating a unique melody that celebrates Sabah’s multicultural spirit. The decorations remind us that our traditions can coexist and shine together,” she said.

The Santa Claus and God of Wealth display has become a popular photo spot for families and tourists alike.

At 1Borneo Hypermall, the Christmas spirit takes on a modern twist with a spectacle of LED lights, intricate wire sculptures, and lush fabrics.

The mall has opted for a simpler yet deeply evocative approach to the holiday season.

Visitors are greeted by a glowing arch made of LED lights at the entrance, framing it like a portal to a wonderland.

Inside, a life-sized reindeer crafted from wire and lights draws admiration, as does a Christmas fireplace scene complete with a couch, Christmas tree, and presents.

Entrepreneur Jeffrey Lazim, 35, who was visiting with his family, appreciated the unique approach. "It’s refreshing to see something like this.

It’s less flashy but more immersive. I’ll probably come back at night to see the lights,” he said, snapping photos of his children.

As night falls, the mall transforms into a radiant haven. Families and couples linger longer, drawn by the lights that shimmer like stars.
