BATU PAHAT – A food stall trader in the industrial area of Taman Kota, Yong Peng, was stunned to find that a box she thought contained a kitten actually held a baby girl.

Salzura Abd Rahman, 42, said she found the fully-formed baby when she was about to open her stall with her son, Danis Syahputra Mohamad Saipol, 17, at about 5am on Monday.

"There was a box placed on the shelf where we keep the dishes. Initially, I thought someone had abandoned a kitten because this area is often used to it.

"I wanted to lift the box, but it was heavy. In my mind, I thought, there must be so many kittens inside.

"When I opened the box and saw its little feet moving, it turned out to be a baby. My whole body started trembling," she said when met at her stall.

Salzura immediately lodged a police report and the baby was handed over to the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat for medical examination.

Meanwhile, Batu Pahat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the baby girl was found in good health without any signs of physical injuries.

"The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code. Members of the public who have any information about this incident are urged to come forward to assist with the police investigation.

"Information can be directed to Batu Pahat district crime investigation officer Inspector Nurul Aqila Che Ali, at 011-55882109, or to any nearby police station. Contact the Johor Contingent Police Hotline at 07-2212999 or the Batu Pahat District Police Hotline at 07-4343999," he said in a statement, today.

The discovery of the baby also caught the attention of the State Health and Environment Executive Councilor Ling Tian Soon, who is also the Yong Peng assemblyman.

He shared the incident on his Facebook page. He expressed disappointment over the irresponsible act of the perpetrator.

"We are all human beings with a conscience, humanity and compassion for one another.

"How could a human being bring themselves to treat another human like this? This is a lesson for all of us and may we all take heed," he wrote.
