SHAH ALAM - Loudspeakers used at religious institutions for calls of prayers are common in Malaysia.

However, when the loudspeaker was used to deliver teachings to attendees and the sound extended beyond the mosque’s vicinity to the entire neighbourhood, it could potentially affect community harmony.

Recently, a video shared by an X user, said to be captured at Masjid Khalid al-Walid in Keramat, Kuala Lumpur, went viral.

The video allegedly highlighted a preacher using the speaker system while delivering religious knowledge.

The post sparked widespread reactions, with many Malaysians criticising the practice of using loudspeakers for sermons as disturbing public peace.

While some defended the use of loudspeakers, claiming it promotes serenity and spiritual reflection, others disagreed as they argued that disturbances, even for religious purposes, are not encouraged in Islam, as it prioritises respecting others’ peace.

The original poster also shared frustrations over the lack of action from the relevant authorities despite lodging multiple complaints.

“I’ve already filed eight complaints with Jawi (Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department and they’ve said they’ve reprimanded them many times. I’ve also filed one complaint with Mindef (Defence Ministry). Still, nothing has been resolved," she claimed.

As the issue went viral, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan said relevant religious authorities will scrutinise the complaints

He had expressed confidence in the authorities' ability to handle the issue and assured the ministry's support if needed.

"This matter falls under the purview of the religious authorities and a proper framework is in place. If any issues arise, we will address them appropriately.

"We do not want anything that disturbs the peace. Insya-Allah, we will handle this wisely and ensure that no discomfort is caused within the community. Investigations and reviews will be conducted," he reportedly said.

He also advised all religious institutions to be mindful of local sensitivities, including the impact of their activities, to maintain harmony within the community.
