A chef’s secret recipe to living well with diabetes
The key to managing it lies not in deprivation, but in making informed and thoughtful lifestyle choices.
Living with diabetes is a challenge that affects millions worldwide, and in Malaysia, the situation is becoming increasingly alarming.
With 15.6 per cent of adults diagnosed with the condition and a staggering 40 per cent unaware they are affected the prevalence of diabetes is a growing health concern.
The key to managing it lies not in deprivation, but in making informed and thoughtful lifestyle choices, as highlighted by experts and individuals navigating the disease.
IMU University nutrition and dietetics professor and a dietitian, Dr Winnie Chee stressed that managing diabetes doesn’t mean giving up on enjoying food. Instead, it’s about integrating healthy choices into everyday life.
“A balanced diet is essential, and it’s about incorporating the right foods in the right proportions.
“Focusing on lean proteins, a variety of vegetables, and whole grains while controlling carbohydrate intake is key,” she said.
Dr Chee also pointed to the Malaysian Healthy Plate model as a practical tool for maintaining balanced portions, ensuring the right intake of nutrients.
She further emphasised the importance of meal planning and selecting foods that provide the body with sustained energy.
“Avoid foods that are high in sugar and unhealthy fats and aim to cook meals with less oil and salt. This not only helps with glucose control but also contributes to overall well-being," she added.
Sweet challenges, a pastry chef’s journey
For 39-year-old pastry chef Ainaa Munirah Pang, the journey to managing diabetes was anything but sweet. Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 27, Ainaa’s work environment presented daily temptations, surrounded by sugary confections and the demands of long hours.
Her initial attempts to manage her glucose levels were often derailed by her high-sugar diet and work stress. It wasn’t until a health scare revealed alarmingly high glucose levels that Ainaa realised she needed support and a solid plan to take control of her health.
Ainaa’s story mirrors the struggles faced by many Malaysians. With the prevalence of diabetes rising, urgent action is needed to address this public health crisis. Efforts to raise awareness, promote early detection, and educate individuals on healthier lifestyle choices are crucial in turning the tide.
A life-altering turning point
Despite Ainaa’s unwavering determination, her glucose levels remained unmanageable, leaving her feeling defeated. Her turning point came four years ago when she endured a serious accident that brought with it a cascade of complications, a brain infection, double vision, and a fractured rib.
This life-altering experience became her wake-up call, compelling her to re-evaluate her priorities and place her health and well-being at the forefront.
With a family history of diabetes, both her mother and sister live with the condition, Ainaa realised that taking charge of her health required a complete lifestyle overhaul. This included making conscious changes to her eating habits and adopting healthier food choices.
A structured programme leads to success
Ainaa’s life transformed when she joined Abbott’s Glucerna® Lifestyle Change Programme (GLCP), a four-week initiative that helped her manage her glucose levels, shed excess weight, and rebuild her confidence.
With the programme’s continuous glucose monitoring, expert nutritional guidance, and a supportive community, Ainaa began to see remarkable improvements in her physical and emotional well-being.
Within a year, she successfully reduced her average glucose level to 8 mmol/L and achieved significant weight loss. Her dedication to a consistent healthy lifestyle has enabled her to reach her target glucose level and maintain it.
Fueled by her renewed energy and zest for life, Ainaa has embraced marathon running as a symbol of her strength and resilience. She has also channeled her love for baking into creating diabetic-friendly recipes, delighting others with sugar-free cakes and pastries that prove life with diabetes can still be sweet.
Ainaa’s journey highlights the power of personalised nutrition and lifestyle changes in achieving better diabetes management and overall health. Her story inspires others to believe in the potential for transformation through commitment and tailored care.
