Sometimes, there are places so stunning that no words or photos can truly capture their essence. Visiting Tasik Cermin, both the famous Tasik Cermin 1 and the recently discovered Tasik Cermin 2, was one of those moments for me.

Hidden within the limestone hills of Perak, these lakes are like whispers from nature, beckoning you to step into a world where time slows and serenity takes over.

This trip had been a long time coming. I missed my chance to visit Tasik Cermin during a previous getaway in 2022. The lake was closed then (for reasons I'm unable to recall), but that only made this experience sweeter.

When I joined the Islamic Tourism Centre’s (ITC) media trip in October, promoting Malaysia’s Muslim-Friendly Tourism (MFFT), Tasik Cermin was high on my list. What surprised me most was not just its beauty, but discovering there is a second lake! Tasik Cermin 2, justly named ‘Hidden World’, was only recently revealed to the public.

Located just 20 minutes from Ipoh’s old town, Tasik Cermin 1 is what most people envision when they hear ‘mirror lake.’ You walk through a century-old mining tunnel and as you emerge, a postcard-perfect view unfolds: a vast lake surrounded by towering limestone hills, the water reflecting every detail like a mirror. It is no wonder the Malaysian government designated it a geopark.

The iconic dock with railings is the most popular spot here, perfect for OOTDs and Insta-TikTok-worthy photos and videos.

The only hiccup during my visit was the rainy season as the dock was slightly submerged due to higher water levels. However, the management has provided an alternative platform to keep the experience just as magical.

You can also opt for a 20-minute boat ride, where you will glide along the lake and get up-close views of the limestone karst. If you are lucky, you might even spot some monkeys lounging in the trees, though rest assured, they are the friendly, non-aggressive kind.

The serene of Tasik Cermin 2

While Tasik Cermin 1 feels like a natural amphitheatre, Tasik Cermin 2 takes you on a secret journey. The adventure begins with a boat ride through a 130-metre water tunnel. It is dark and thrilling, so dark in fact, that the boatman lights the way with a massive torch.

Depending on the water level, you might even have to duck under the low ceiling, which adds a touch of excitement. Once you emerge, the scene is quieter and more untouched. There are no docks or railings, just you, the boat, and nature.

The water’s surface mirrors the trees and limestone cliffs, creating a surreal sense of calmness. There are designated photo spots, but Tasik Cermin 2 is less about capturing the perfect picture and more about soaking in the moment.

So, which one should you visit?

It depends on what you are looking for. If you want iconic photos and a quick yet breathtaking experience, Tasik Cermin 1 is a must. It is what made the area famous, after all. But if you are seeking peace and immersion in nature, Tasik Cermin 2 is the clear winner.

My suggestion? Do both, but be strategic. Skip the boat ride at Tasik Cermin 1 and save it for Tasik Cermin 2, where the journey feels more intimate and exclusive. Tasik Cermin 1 has a lively energy with its dock and crowds, while Tasik Cermin 2 feels like a private retreat.

Pro tips and future mysteries

The best time to visit is when the sun is directly overhead, making the water shimmer in all its reflective glory. But with Malaysia’s unpredictable weather; especially during the rainy season, this can be tricky.

Here is an exciting nugget I picked up from the boatman. There could be more hidden lakes waiting to be discovered within these limestone hills. With Tasik Cermin 1 and Tasik Cermin 2 located side by side, and the latter uncovered through underwater exploration, who knows?

There might just be a Tasik Cermin 3 or more waiting to be found. The thought of returning one day to uncover these hidden gems is nothing short of exhilarating.

For now, though, Tasik Cermin 1 and 2 offer a magical escape into nature’s artistry. Each has its charm and together, they paint a picture of Perak’s unique beauty. One that will linger in your memory long after the visit.
