WASHINGTON - Fox News host and army veteran Pete Hegseth has been nominated to serve as the next US Secretary of Defence, President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, reported the German news agency (dpa).

Trump praised Hegseth as a "warrior for the troops and for the country", highlighting his toughness and strong belief in the "America First" policy.

"With Pete at the helm, America's enemies are on notice," Trump said in a statement.

Trump also referenced Hegseth's military service, noting how he served in Iraq, Afghanistan and at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba, for which he received high honours.

Hegseth has used his platform as a television host to advocate for the military and veterans. Currently, Hegseth is one of the hosts of "Fox & Friends Weekend" on the conservative television channel Fox News, a show that Trump often tuned into during his campaign. - BERNAMA-dpa
