BEIJING - A 62-year-old man has deliberately driven his vehicle into a crowd of people, killing 35 and injuring a further 43, security officials in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai reported on Tuesday, according to German news agency (dpa).

In the attack, which took place on Monday evening, the man used his small off-road vehicle to burst through the gates of a sports centre and plough into the people exercising there.

The man was detained by police as he attempted to flee, the reports said.

He had seriously injured himself with a knife and had gone into a coma, the security authorities said.

Preliminary investigations indicated that he was dissatisfied with the distribution of assets following his divorce and that this had led to the attack. - BERNAMA-DPA
