KOTA BHARU – A father discovered the body of his 14-year-old daughter, believed to have drowned after her motorcycle veered into a canal in Kampung Pangkal Pisang, Peringat, on Wednesday.

The victim, Ainun Mardiah Azeman, was found by her father, Azeman Harun, 56, at around 5pm at the bottom of the canal, which was approximately one metre deep.

Adding to the heartbreak, Ainun’s mother, Roshanita Ahmat, 51, fainted upon receiving the tragic news and was admitted to the University Sains Malaysia Hospital (USM) in Kubang Kerian for treatment but has since regained consciousness.

Ainun’s older brother, Azizi, 24, said he last saw his sister when he picked her up from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pangkal Kala at 4pm.

Ainun’s older brother, Ahmad Azizi, 24, said he last saw his sister when he picked her up from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pangkal Kala at 4pm.

“At around 4.40pm, Ainun went out again, riding the family’s Yamaha Ego motorcycle to a grocery store just 100 metres from our house, but she didn’t return.

“Shortly after, my father received a call from a resident who reported seeing our family’s motorcycle in the canal with the lights still on and the engine running.

“My father rushed to the canal, went down and found my sister’s body trapped under the motorcycle in the water,” he said, speaking to reporters at their home in Kampung Pangkal Pisang, Peringat, on Wednesday.

Ainun was taken by her father to the Peringat Health Clinic emergency department, where resuscitation efforts were made for half an hour.

“However, the doctor confirmed that Ainun had already passed away.

“Her body was later transported to the USM Hospital Forensic Unit by a police vehicle that arrived soon after,” he added.

According to Azizi, Ainun, the ninth of ten siblings, was a quiet person and had recently been seen often lost in thought.

Her body would be laid to rest at the Pangkal Pisang Muslim Cemetery following a post-mortem examination.
