SHAH ALAM - The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in efforts to combat corruption is an innovative and proactive step.

Ikram Kuala Lumpur President Zainal Adnan Abdul Halim said that AI could detect unusual situations, reduce human interaction, enhance transparency and provide a more efficient early warning system.

"I strongly agree with the view that the use of AI can help reduce corruption.

"The use of AI in every activity, especially involving public administration management, can reduce exposure to corruption, such as the issuance of permits, grants or public procurement.

"Every process will be ensured to follow the established procedures and governance without any favouritism or influence from certain parties," he told Sinar on Thursday.

Previously, the media reported that the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that AI could reduce corruption and help in implementing institutional reforms.

She said the existing laws in the country need to evolve with the times.

Azalina added that technology was the way forward, so that institutional reforms, along with new laws and available technology systems, could bring about change.

Meanwhile, Zainal pointed out that the use of AI would be able to improve governance by strengthening transparency, accountability and efficiency in decision-making processes and resource management.

He added that AI could also be effectively used in continuous auditing and was capable of analysing financial and operational data to detect any signs related to corruption.

"The early warning systems developed by AI can inform authorities about any irregularities, allowing immediate action to be taken.

"Government institutions and the public sector can be more effective in detecting, preventing, and taking action against corruption.

"However, the success of AI use depends on the government's and organisations' commitment to implementing this technology transparently, fairly and establishing a legal framework that supports its use," he explained.
