SHAH ALAM – The amendment to the Federal Constitution (Amendment Bill) related to citizenship, passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, is seen as a victory for all Malaysian citizen mothers.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that the bill was passed with a vote exceeding the two-thirds majority required by the Constitution.

“A truly historic day for the country. Thanks to those who consistently fought for this cause.

“Alhamdulillah. Congratulations to the Madani Government and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” she said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

Previously, the Dewan Rakyat passed the amendment, which was tabled by the Home Ministry.

The bill, presented for a second reading in March, was passed with a two-thirds majority after being debated by 70 members of parliament.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul announced the decision following a division vote.

He said that 206 members of parliament agreed to pass the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024, while one disagreed, and 14 were absent.
