KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Veteran Artistes Foundation (YAVM) is organising a ‘Down Memory Lane Nostalgia Night’ on Nov 1 in Miri, Sarawak, to honour artistes of the ‘Pop Yeh Yeh’ era who are still active in the local music industry.

YAVM chairman Sandakiah Azez said the event also aims to raise funds to help veteran artistes in need.

She said 23 carefully selected sing-along songs suitable for all age groups will be performed by various singers participating in the show, accompanied by the Sandpepper Band and dancers from Gah Rentak.

The line-up of singers includes Datuk Jefrydin, A. Rahman Onn, J. Sham, S. Mariam, Junainah M. Amin, Datuk Siti Fairus, Seri (Kilauan Emas), and P. Radhi, who resembles the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee.

"Guests will also be entertained by the 2011 ‘Maharaja Lawak’ champion Sharizan Ahmad, better known as Abon,” she said.

Sandakiah added that despite the various new musical trends, ‘Pop Yeh Yeh’ music from the 1960s and 1970s continues to be popular, with its fans not only enjoying the songs of that era but also the performers’ style.

"Names like M. Shariff, A. Ramlie, M. Osman, S. Jibeng, Dato’ A. Rahman Hassan, The Rhythm Boys, The Swallows and The Siglap Five are synonymous with ‘Pop Yeh Yeh’.

"The upbeat rhythm of ‘Pop Yeh Yeh’ songs, said to be influenced by the British band The Beatles, remains a favourite at karaoke centres and weddings. This is the perfect opportunity for fans of 1960s and 1970s music in Miri and Brunei to come and see these artistes perform live," she added. - BERNAMA
