Health Ministry revokes notification of two cosmetic products found to contain poison
The products were the Snow White Treatment Cream and Kak Ell Treatment Cream, both of which were found to contain mercury.
KUALA LUMPUR - The Health Ministry (MOH) has revoked the notification of two cosmetic products because they contain a scheduled poison and are no longer allowed to be sold in Malaysia.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan said the products in question were Snow White Treatment Cream and Kak Ell Treatment Cream, both of which were found to contain mercury.
"Sellers and distributors of these cosmetic products must immediately cease their sale and distribution, as it violates the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984,” he said in a statement today.
According to Dr Muhammad Radzi, mercury is prohibited in cosmetic products because it can be absorbed into the body, potentially causing damage to the kidneys and nervous system.
"It can also interfere with the brain development of young or unborn children. Mercury can also cause rashes, irritation and other changes to the skin,” he said.
Individuals found guilty of an offence under the regulation can be fined up to RM25,000 or sentenced to three years in prison, or both, for the first offence and a fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of five years or both for subsequent offences.
Companies found in violation of the regulations face a maximum fine of RM50,000 for the first offence, and RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
Consumers are advised to stop using the products immediately and seek the advice of healthcare professionals if they experience any discomfort or adverse effects. - BERNAMA
