SHAH ALAM - Barisan Nasional (BN) triumphed in the Mahkota by-election, securing a commanding majority with 20,648 votes.

In a landslide victory, Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah won the Mahkota state seat by a commanding majority of 20,648 votes, nearly quadrupling the margin from the last State Election.

The official results were announced by Returning Officer Azurawati Wahid at the Mahkota by-election official vote tallying centre at Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail in Kluang today.

She declared that Syed Hussien secured 27,941 votes, outpacing his rival from Perikatan Nasional (PN), Mohamad Haizan Jaafar, who garnered 7,347 votes.

Azurawati also announced that 339 ballot papers were rejected, and 24 were not returned.

She thanked all parties for their cooperation throughout the by-election process, which began with nominations on Sept 14.

Voter turnout for the by-election stood at 53.84 per cent, she added.

This outcome reflected BN's firm grip on the Johor seat, with the coalition's majority surging from the 5,166 votes achieved in the 2022 State Election.

The voter turnout for the by-election was 53.84 per cent, slightly lower than the 57.34 per cent turnout recorded during the 2022 Johor State Assembly Election.

Despite the lower turnout, BN's performance far exceeded expectations.

Compared to the 2022 election, when BN’s Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain won with 16,611 votes, Syed Hussien's victory demonstrated a considerable increase in support.

This also marked BN’s fourth victory in Mahkota since the seat was first contested in 2004.

The by-election was called following the death of Azizah on Aug 2 at the age of 64.

During the 2022 election, Azizah had secured a majority of 5,166 votes in a four-way contest against Pakatan Harapan (PH), PN, and Warisan.

The Mahkota by-election was one of several held that year, with others taking place in Kuala Kubu Bharu, Sungai Bakap, and Nenggiri.

This win for BN strengthened its position as a dominant political force in Johor, a state where it had historically maintained strong support.
