National Press Club celebrates 76 years, honours veteran journalists at star-studded event

NPC honours media veterans and women leaders in journalism.

KUALA LUMPUR - The National Press Club (NPC) marked its 76th anniversary in grand fashion, paying tribute to some of the most influential figures in Malaysian journalism.

The star-studded event, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) here yesterday, honoured 17 media professionals whose contributions had shaped the industry and played a vital role in nation-building over the years.

In attendance were the Communications Ministry’s Deputy Secretary-General Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif, NPC President Datuk Ahirudin Attan, and the event chairperson and NPC Vice-President, Farrah Naz Abd Karim.

During his speech, NPC President Ahirudin expressed his admiration for the industry’s trailblazers, acknowledging the pivotal role these veterans had played in Malaysia's journalism landscape.

"Tonight’s awards celebrate those who have blazed the trail for all of us. We are indeed humbled that you are all here tonight.

"You are the giants that have chronicled our nation’s development.

"We stand on your shoulders, as it is the only way that we can see clearly into the challenging future ahead," he said, acknowledging the pivotal role of these veterans in Malaysia's journalism landscape.

The evening also celebrated the exceptional leadership of women in journalism, with Farrah highlighting their lasting impact.

“Tonight’s event is a celebration of the indomitable spirit of women leaders in journalism who demonstrated outstanding leadership, an unwavering commitment to the truth and an unflinching pursuit of excellence,” she said.

She added that these women had set a high standard for future generations of female journalists, leaving an enduring legacy for the entire industry.

Among the awardees was PC Shivadas, who received the prestigious NPC Diamond Award, while Datuk Hardev Kaur was presented with the NPC President’s Award.

The Media Luminary Award went to four recipients: Datuk Nuraina Samad, Datin Paduka Esther Ng, Nini Yusof, and Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

The Lifetime Dedication to Journalism Award celebrated the unwavering service of 11 veteran journalists: Zainoor Sulaiman, Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, Abd Karim Abd Shukor, SN Rajan, Datuk Ahmad Murad Merican, Tan Jooi Long, Datuk Mokhtar Hussain, S. Sivaselvam, Zulkafly Baharuddin, Datuk Jaafar Husin, and Abdul Rahman Ahmad.

Approximately 170 media professionals and industry leaders attended the prestigious event, which honoured the journalists for their commitment to truth and excellence in journalism.

Adding to the evening’s charm, veteran singer Datuk Francissca Peter captivated the audience with her performance, creating an atmosphere of reflection, gratitude, and inspiration as the event celebrated both the rich history and promising future of journalism in Malaysia.
