KLUANG - Sergeant Mohd Khairul Ibrahim raced 250km from Putrajaya to Mahkota, determined to cast his vote in the by-election, arriving just 10 minutes before the polling station doors closed.

The 38-year-old policeman, who had been transferred to the Putrajaya district police headquarters nine months ago, was committed to fulfilling his duty as a voter in the Mahkota by-election.

“I was transferred nine months ago to Putrajaya. The traffic was smooth, which is why I managed to arrive early,” he told reporters at the Dewan Zamrud polling station.

Khairul's determination highlighted the importance of the by-election for many voters, even amid logistical challenges.

“I’m happy that I could fulfill my responsibility and cast my vote. That’s what matters most to me,” he added.

The Mahkota by-election, with polling scheduled for Sept 28, is a straight contest between Barisan Nasional candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Mohamad Haizan Jaafar of Perikatan Nasional.

The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent assemblyman, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, aged 63, on Aug 2.

The Mahkota state constituency, which falls under the Kluang parliamentary area, has a total of 66,318 registered voters, with 20 polling centres set to open this Saturday.
