Mahkota by-election: DAP MP slams campaign tactics calling Chinese voters to punish Umno

KLUANG - DAP has slammed the actions of certain parties spreading poison pen letters intended to frighten Chinese voters from participating in the upcoming Mahkota by-election.

Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi revealed that letters were allegedly placed in mailboxes, urging Chinese voters to reject Umno’s candidate, Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah.

Wong said the letters were discovered in the mailboxes of residents across various housing areas, including Taman Sri Kluang, Taman Suria, Taman Liang Seng, and Taman Pelangi the previous night.

"We received complaints from residents who saw individuals walking from house to house distributing these letters, which were written in Mandarin.

"We condemn such dirty campaign tactics and are not accusing any particular party, but the content of these letters clearly benefits the Opposition," she said at a media conference here yesterday.

Wong urged Chinese voters not to be swayed by the letters and to fulfill their responsibility to vote on Sept 28.

She also refuted the claims made in the letters, stressing that the alleged conflict between Umno and DAP leaders had been resolved through the leadership of both parties.

"Chinese voters must come out to vote to demonstrate political stability in the country, which will reassure foreign investors and help revitalise the national economy," she added.

When asked if DAP would file a police report regarding the distribution of the letters, Wong said the party is considering it.

The Mahkota by-election, held following the death of incumbent Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2, is a straight fight between BN candidate Syed Hussein and Perikatan Nasional candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar.

The Election Commission (EC) has set Sept 28 as polling day, while early voting takes place on Sept 24.
