SHAH ALAM - Umno criticised the suggestion made by Selangor delegate Aubidullah Fahim Ibrahim at the Pas Youth Assembly to consider cross-cultural or cross-ethnic marriages as a political strategy.

Its Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said that such unions should not be used as political tools or for power ambitions.

“In Islam, marriage is a sacred union before Allah and should not be used as a tool for political gain and power,” he said in a post on X on Thursday.

Previously, Aubidullah also stressed that cross-cultural or cross-ethnic marriages could help a party not only secure a single vote but potentially garner hundreds of votes.

However, this suggestion provoked various reactions among delegates, leading the chairperson to have to calm the situation.

Pas Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, when asked to comment on the proposal, said that it represents Aubidullah’s personal view and is not necessarily a decision of the party.
