Najib still warded for acute knee pain, sleep apnea, 1MDB trial to resume Sept 17
HKL Orthopedic and Traumatology Department senior consultant Dr Siti Hawa Tahir said Najib currently needed to be monitored by the medical team on his progress due to his opioid medication.
SHAH ALAM - Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been warded in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) for acute knee inflammation and sleep apnea.
According to English daily New Straits Times, this led to the postponement of the former prime minister's trial over abuse of power involving RM2.3 billion in 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to Sept 17.
Earlier, it was reported that HKL Orthopedic and Traumatology Department senior consultant Dr Siti Hawa Tahir in providing an update to the court on Najib's health said based on yesterday's evaluation, Najib will be on another two days medical leave from today.
"His medical certificate (MC) for today and tomorrow was issued based on yesterday's evaluation. In cases of acute inflammation, the condition is assessed on a day-to-day basis. He needs two days of rest.
"The pain has become better with opioids but he has developed some of the side effects which are nausea and drowsiness.
"Najib also has a sleep apnea which is a concern for all of us," she was reported as saying inside the witness stand.
She added that Najib currently needed to be monitored by the medical team on his progress due to his opioid medication.
Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah then set Sept 17 for the trial to resume.
It was reported that on Tuesday, Dr Siti Hawa told the court that Najib was on medical leave for two days due to acute knee pain.
The trial was postponed then and it was supposed to resume today.
Najib's trial have now entered the oral submissions stage.
Najib, 71, is facing four charges of abusing his position to obtain RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds at the AmIslamic Bank Berhad branch on Jalan Raja Chulan, Bukit Ceylon, between Feb 24, 2011, and Dec 19, 2014.
He is also facing 21 charges of money laundering involving the same amount at the same bank between March 22, 2013 and Aug 30, 2013.
Najib is charged under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act and could be punished under Section 24(1) of the same law and Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act.
