Death and missing toll climbs to 324 as Typhoon Yagi's aftermath continues in Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam - At least 324 people are reported dead or missing due to the landslide and flash floods triggered by Typhoon Yagi last weekend, as of 5:30 pm on Wednesday, according to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

Lao Cai Province was one of the most affected with 72 deaths and 111 still missing, m Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported,

The severe landslide that wiped away the entire Lang Nu Village in the province's Bao Yen District resulted in 30 deaths, 83 people missing, and 18 injuries, local authorities reported.

More than 54,000 houses across the northern cities and provinces were also submerged as the water level in the region’s rivers rose to alarming levels.

Earlier, Ministry of National Defence deployed military helicopters to deliver disaster relief to people in affected areas of Yen Bai and Cao Bang provinces.

Rising water levels have also compelled the capital city of Hanoi to evacuate households in areas near the Red River, including 380 in Hoan Kiem District, 836 in Bac Tu Liem District, 276 in Ba Dinh District, and 129 in the suburban Quoc Oai District.

A total of 126 schools in the city were also forced to close on Wednesday due to the ongoing heavy downpours.

In solidarity with the nation, various state departments and agencies have launched support campaigns among public employees to deliver relief to those affected by the devastating consequences of Typhoon Yagi. - BERNAMA-VNA
