SHAH ALAM - Every September 11, the world commemorates the devastating terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives in 2001.
The attacks, orchestrated by al-Qaeda, left an indelible mark on history, forever changing the global fight against terrorism.
Among the thousands who perished that fateful day were individuals from various nations, including three Malaysians whose stories serve as poignant reminders of the personal toll the tragedy took.
One such victim was 23-year-old Vijayashanker Paramsothy, a financial analyst at Aon Insurance, who worked on the 103rd floor of the South Tower.
Fondly known as Vijay, he was a rising star in his field.
According to an archived story by AsiaOne, Vijay could have escaped along with his colleagues via the emergency staircase.
However, in an act of selflessness, he stayed behind to assist his injured manager down the stairs. Tragically, Vijay did not make it out.
Another Malaysian victim, Khoo Ai Lin, was a 38-year-old mutual fund manager at Fred Alger Management, based on the 93rd floor of the North Tower.
Khoo was a highly respected professional whose insights were frequently sought by the media.
Despite her demanding career, she was known for always making time for her loved ones.
Khoo was engaged to be married at the time of her death, a detail reported by The Star, adding yet another layer of heartbreak to her tragic loss.
Also among the Malaysian victims was Ang Chui Yong, a 37-year-old technical analyst at Marsh USA, who worked two floors above Khoo in the North Tower.
Ang was a devoted mother to two daughters, aged four and eight at the time of the attacks.
These three Malaysians—Vijay, Khoo, and Ang—are remembered not only for their professional achievements but also for the love and care they extended to those around them.
Their stories, like so many others from that tragic day, reflect the profound loss experienced by families across the globe.
On this solemn anniversary, as we honour the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, we also remember the unique stories of these Malaysians who perished in an unimaginable tragedy.
