KUALA LUMPUR - The Palestinian Football Association (FA) remains determined to host international matches on home soil, highlighting the significance of playing in front of their home supporters despite the ongoing challenges posed by the Israeli occupation.

Palestinian Sports Minister Jibril Rajoub acknowledged the difficulties Palestinian athletes face under Israeli occupation, which severely limits their freedom of movement and their ability to host matches at home.

Despite these challenges, he stressed the Palestinian FA's dedication to playing matches on their own soil.

"The Palestinian FA remains committed to hosting matches on Palestinian soil and in the presence of our fans.

“We particularly appreciate the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) recent decision to permit Palestinian teams to host matches at home, this decision reaffirms the right of Palestinian athletes to compete in their own country, as all athletes around the world do, and to be surrounded by their supporters.

“Our sincere appreciation extended also to our brothers at the Malaysia Football Association (FAM) for their priceless efforts to prepare for the match (World Cup Qualifying Match versus Jordan) and to make this activity a success.

“We also commend the AFC's dedication in collaboration with FAM to ensuring the safety and protection of Palestinian athletes, and their commitment to protect the right of Palestinians to participate in international competitions and enjoy freedom of movement,” he said during a press conference held at the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Kuala Lumpur earlier today.

Jibril also did not shy away from addressing the severe toll Israeli occupation has taken on Palestinian sports.

‘The international community must address the severe impacts of the Israeli occupation on Palestinian sports, including the tragic loss of over 410 athletes, youth and scouting members, as well as the extensive destruction of sports facilities.

“We call on the international community to stand for the rights of Palestinian athletes and to support efforts to overcome the unlawful acts of the Israeli occupation. Solidarity and support are essential for enabling our athletes to compete with dignity and fairness,” he said.

Jibril also expressed deep gratitude to Malaysia for its unwavering support and solidarity during Palestine's World Cup qualifying campaign. He praised the Malaysian government, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for their strong political and moral stance towards the Palestinian people.

“In conclusion, we express our hope for the continued success of our team in their World Cup journey and extend our sincere thanks to Malaysia and all our supporters for their encouragement. Thank you,” he said.
