MELAKA - The recent death of an eight-month-old baby boy at a daycare centre in Melaka has raised serious concerns about the safety of children in such facilities.

The circumstances surrounding the death were eerily similar to a previous incident in 2022 when a six-month-old baby girl died under similar circumstances.

In the latest incident, Muhamad Al Fateh Amri Mohd Fikry Amri was allegedly swaddled, force-fed with a bottle, and smothered with a pillow at a daycare, evoking painful memories of Haura Najia Mohd Kamaruddin Helsa, who died at another daycare in Melaka on October 27, 2022.

The earlier incident gained widespread attention on social media last Saturday when Haura’s mother, Nurul Fateha Sandollah, expressed her grief and frustration with the daycare's management for leaving her daughter swaddled for six hours.

Nurul Fateha recounted that on the day of the tragedy, at around 4.29pm, she received a call from the daycare informing her that Haura was unconscious.

She rushed to the daycare, only to find out her baby had already been taken to a nearby clinic before being transferred to Hospital Melaka.

“The doctor told us Haura arrived without a pulse, and after 24 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), her pulse returned, but it was very weak.

"She was intubated and fully reliant on a ventilator,” Nurul Fateha said.

She added that her husband spoke to the daycare caregiver, who revealed that Haura had been tightly swaddled and fed before being left on her side.

When the caregiver returned, she found Haura face down but assumed the baby could still breathe, neglecting to adjust her position.

“She only checked on Haura at 4pm and found her unconscious.

"Haura had been left from 10am until 4pm. How much must she have struggled to breathe until she passed away,” the grieving mother wrote.

In a similarly devastating case, Sinar reported that the father of Muhamad Al Fateh, Major Ir TS Mohd Fikry Amri Abd Halim, 39, was shattered upon learning of the alleged mistreatment of his son.

The daycare caregiver allegedly swaddled the baby, force-fed him, covered him with a cloth, and smothered him with a pillow.

Mohd Fikry Amri, who serves at Kem Perdana Sungai Besi, revealed that these inhumane actions were captured on the daycare’s closed circuit television (CCTV), which he reviewed with the police.
