A time tunnel of Kuala Lumpur’s past at Intermark Mall
The collaboration aims to showcase an impressive collection of historical photographs and artifacts that trace the city's evolution over the past 60 years.
Kuala Lumpur is renowned for its iconic landmarks and vibrant cityscape, but amidst the skyscrapers lies a hidden gem often overshadowed: the Kuala Lumpur Library.
As the nation gears up to celebrate its 67th Merdeka Month, the library is making a remarkable effort to bring the rich tapestry of Kuala Lumpur's history to the forefront.
This initiative is not just about preserving the past but sharing it with a broader audience, allowing both locals and visitors to connect with the city's heritage.
In a collaborative effort with Kuala Lumpur Library, Intermark Mall is unveiling a unique exhibition titled ‘Kuala Lumpur: A Journey Through Time’ as part of the Merdeka celebrations. The exhibition will be on display from Aug 12 to Sept 1, 2024, at Intermark Mall, strategically located to attract office workers, tourists, and students.
The collaboration aims to showcase an impressive collection of historical photographs and artifacts that trace the city's evolution over the past 60 years.
Intermark Mall General Manager Evelyn Woon expressed her excitement about the campaign, highlighting its significance in commemorating Kuala Lumpur's transformation.
"This is the 67th year of Merdeka, and we've witnessed the incredible growth and transformation of KL's skyline. "We thought it would be meaningful to create a campaign that resonates with the city's dwellers by taking them through a time tunnel of beautiful memories," she said at the launch of ‘Kuala Lumpur: A Journey Through Time’ event held in Intermark Mall.
She also noted that the initiative aligns with Intermark’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Malaysia's cultural heritage.
"The wealth of information at the KL Library, combined with our strategic location, offers a unique opportunity to bring these historical treasures to a wider audience," she said.
Meanwhile, the Head Librarian of Kuala Lumpur Library Anita Mohd Jali welcomed the collaboration with enthusiasm. She explained that while the library holds a treasure trove of historical information, its capacity for public exhibitions is limited. "It's wonderful that Intermark approached us for this programme.
Our day-to-day operations focus on library functions, and exposing our historical collections has always been a challenge.
"Now, with this collaboration, we can share the rich history of Kuala Lumpur with the public and remind everyone of the unity and spirit that marked our journey to independence," she said.
She further said that it is important to reflect on the past to reignite the Malaysian spirit.
"We have gained indepence for 67 years, but with the changing times, it is essential to reconnect with our historical roots. Programmes like these exhibitions are crucial in reminding us of the values and unity we once had.
"They help ensure that future generations appreciate and uphold the legacy of cooperation and resilience that defines our nation," she notes.
The exhibition is part of Intermark’s 'Hail Heritage' initiative, which seeks to honor and showcase the cultural legacies that have shaped Kuala Lumpur.
The campaign features a range of activities including miniature art displays, a sketchwalk exhibition, and performances by Deciso Conservatoire.
Shoppers can also enjoy various redemptions and special events, including a Sketching Through Time workshop and performances by a saxophone ensemble and a string quartet.
