PUTRAJAYA - The people are urged to draw lessons from Surah al-Hujurat and Surah al-Jumu'ah by liberating their souls from creating harmful content and comments that hurt others.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said labelling, using derogatory language and causing offence had often occurred easily on social media.

"As highlighted in the reflection earlier, especially on social media, we frequently find it easy to label, use hurtful words and cause distress.

"When complaints are made, we often find they come from fake accounts that use social media with malicious intent," he said during a press conference at the Malaysia #QuranHour programme held at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque, today.

He said every opinion and criticism should be conveyed with full decorum and etiquette.

"We can express our views, but this is something I always emphasise in Parliament—manners and proper etiquette must be observed," he added.

Also present at the event were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Yayasan Warisan Ummah Ikhlas (WUIF) founder and Karangkraf Group Advisor Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub.

The programme themed "Merdeka Spirit: Deciphering the Rukun Negara" was guided by the two surahs with the aim of strengthening unity and harmony among the people through the appreciation of the Rukun Negara, in line with the noble values contained in the Quran and Sunnah.

The guidance from Surah al-Hujurat was highly relevant to the challenges we faced, such as communication ethics, news verification and maintaining good human relations.

Surah al-Jumu'ah provides solutions for building a stronger and more united community.

The event began with a Prologue on the Meaning of Independence, delivered by Mohamad Zarifi Mohamad Daud from the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) and concluded with a pledge recitation by 1,500 participants of the programme.

Meanwhile, Fahmi, who is also the government's spokesperson expressed willingness to consider including Malaysia #QuranHour in the National Month calendar annually.

"We will work on it together," he said, describing Malaysia #QuranHour as a timely programme that benefits the people.
