KUALA LUMPUR - In a historic move for the party, Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has announced that Cameron Highlands MP Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor will be given a seat at the Umno Supreme Council (MKT) as a representative of the Orang Asli community.

This decision marks a significant recognition of the contributions made by the Orang Asli people to the nation and the party.

Zahid highlighted the importance of including diverse voices within the party and expressed his appreciation for the role that the Orang Asli community has played in shaping Malaysia's political landscape.

By inviting Ramli to participate in the MKT meetings, he said Umno was making history by elevating the status of the Orang Asli within the party structure.

"This is a new chapter for Umno, as we embrace the contributions of the Orang Asli community and ensure their representation at the highest levels of decision-making," Zahid said at his winding up speech in Umno General Assembly 2024 held in World Trade Centre 2024.

The inclusion of Ramli, the first Orang Asli MP in Malaysia, was seen as a step forward in promoting inclusivity and recognising the significance of the indigenous communities in the country's development.

This move is expected to strengthen Umno's ties with the Orang Asli community and reinforce the party's commitment to representing all segments of Malaysian society.

Ramli first won the Cameron Highlands seat in a by-election on Jan 26, 2019, defeating the Pakatan Harapan candidate with a majority of 3,238 votes. He retained the seat in the 2022 general election.

Ramli currently serves as the Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, a position he has held since Dec 19, 2022 and also a member of the Public Accounts Committee and the Special Select Committee on Security in the Dewan Rakyat.
