KUALA LUMPUR - TikTok isn’t just for the Gen Zs anymore, it’s becoming a key platform for promoting social responsibility and connecting with the public especially within Umno. In other words, it needs to be their readily-available campaign platform.

Umno Youth Chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh added some tech-savvy flair to his final speech today by delivering an impromptu ‘TikTok 101’ class on the magic of the algorithm, ‘like, comment, share’—right in the middle of the top leadership's winding-up addresses.

He created a lively moment that showcased how modern tools were reshaping even the most traditional political platforms.

"In the past, Umno was labelled as 'lazy' and accused of 'not doing its job,' but in today's modern world, the efforts made by Umno are clear for everyone to see.

"What we need to do is 'like, comment, and share,' and when we make local leaders' posts go viral, even those who don't follow them can see.

"The issue here is how we promote our leaders, and with our efforts as Umno members, we, as the cyber machinery, have the power to promote Umno," he said during the 2024 Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC) today.

Dr Akmal praised the efforts of Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Nenggiri by-election, Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, popularly known as Awie, for effectively utilising social media as a platform to showcase his work in Nenggiri.

He commended Awie, stating that although many people outside of Nenggiri might not know him, the local residents were well aware of his efforts. Akmal highlighted that what Azmawi has accomplished was extraordinary, particularly in showcasing every welfare activity he carries out within Umno.

"Azmawi is always uploading on TikTok, and he's created 800 TikTok videos already. With the help of hashtags, people can easily see everything he's been doing, and this has really helped showcase Umno's activities," he added.

Akmal emphasised the crucial role and responsibility of all Umno branch leaders, divisions, and other leaders in fulfilling their duties as the party's cyber machinery.

He called for a concerted effort to dominate the social media landscape, stressing that it is Umno's responsibility to promote itself effectively.

"We are in a social media battle, and Umno needs to emerge victorious. By leveraging these tools, we can ensure that our content appears on everyone's For You Page (FYP), even for those who don't follow us," he urged.

Dr Akmal said this was the easiest method to ensure everyone, especially the youths, "saw" what Umno were doing and working hard to change.
