KUALA LUMPUR - Umno will never stop seeking justice for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is currently serving time in prison for corruption related to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

In his winding up speech today at the General Assembly, Umno Vice President Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail emphasised that they have not failed but instead simply have not yet succeeded.

“The Pardons Board decided to reduce Bossku’s (Najib) sentence, but the question remains about the existence of a Royal Decree Addendum, suggesting that the remainder of Bossku’s sentence be served at home.

“This has not happened, raising questions about whether such a decree actually exists.

“Umno’s President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has issued an affidavit confirming that he has personally seen the decree. I have also issued an affidavit affirming my knowledge of its existence,” he said to the delegates.

The Pahang Menteri Besar also stressed that the risks that Umno was taking in this situation and were not insignificant.

“Therefore, I ask the delegates and all Umno members to place their trust in Datuk Seri President (Zahid) and the entire Umno leadership today.

“As long as there is a way, as long as there is an opportunity, as long as we have life and strength, our efforts to seek justice for Bossku will not cease,” he said.

Najib began his prison term in August 2022 after his final appeal was rejected by Malaysia's Federal Court. Initially sentenced to 12 years, his jail term was later halved to six years following a partial royal pardon granted by the Pardons Board in January 2024.

This decision also included a reduction of his RM210 million fine, although the exact new amount has not been specified.

With the reduction in his sentence, Najib is expected to complete his term by August 2028. However, if he demonstrates good behavior, he could be eligible for parole as early as August 2026, which would allow him to serve only two-thirds of his new six-year sentence.

Additionally, if he fails to pay the remaining fine, he could face an additional five years in prison, which would extend his total time behind bars if not resolved before the end of his current sentence.
