Take lessons from our political relationship with Pas, Nurulhidayah reminds
She also pointed out that Pas, which now staunchly opposes DAP, was once closely aligned with the party.
KUALA LUMPUR - Wanita Umno exco Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid urges Umno members and supporters to reflect on the party's past political relationships, particularly with Pas, as a valuable lesson for the future.
Nurulhidayah drew parallels between politics and the lyrics of popular singer Ella’s hit song Pedih, using them to symbolise the emotional toll of past political relationships. She also referenced ‘Jinak Umpan Di Air Tenang’, cautioning against political naivety.
Using music as a metaphor for the lessons learned, she said, “I would like to immerse all the representatives into the lyrics of the songs I have sung.
"I hope we can take lessons from our political relationship with Pas," she said while delivering her speech at the Umno General Assembly 2024.
Nurulhidayah also highlighted the irony of the derogatory term ‘UMDAP’ used by critics of Umno’s allies with DAP
She pointed out that Pas, which now staunchly opposes DAP, was once closely aligned with the party.
"Pas? Once upon a time, they glorified DAP. So devoted to DAP, it was like love destines to last an eternity. But where did they end up?" she said.
Turning to Bersatu, Nurulhidayah slammed their past collaboration with DAP, particularly the decision to appoint a leader from Bersatu as Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng during their time in government.
"Bersatu? They agreed with everything DAP did, to the point that it was out of control," she said.
Despite these reflections, Nurul expressed confidence in the current unity government, stressing that lessons have been learned from previous leadership failures.
"With the awareness from the past leadership’s mistakes, from their failure to govern, we believe we have taken lessons, and Insha-Allah, it will not happen within the unity government," she said.
Nurulhidayah also defended Umno's role in the unity government, highlighting the responsibilities entrusted to the party by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, including leadership positions such as the Halal Committee Chairman and the National TVET Council.
"What is even more reassuring is that the Prime Minister himself has entrusted Umno's leadership, specifically our President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“So, in what way are we being used? Where is the 'UMDAP'?" she said, dismissing accusations that Umno is being exploited by its political partners.
