KUALA LUMPUR - As the Mahkota by-election approaches, Barisan Nasional (BN) is taking a strategic approach by collaborating with component parties within the Unity Government.

BN Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that this strategy aims to secure a broad base of support, particularly among Chinese and Indian voters within the constituency.

The Umno president emphasised the importance of this collaboration, particularly given that approximately 35 per cent of the 66,000 voters in Mahkota are of Chinese descent.

“So, we are working closely with all the parties within the Unity Government to mobilise the machinery that we have.

“For this, certain segments will be allocated to DAP, and other segments will be given to MCA,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (KLWTC) here today.

The strategy also extends to engaging Indian voters, with Zahid highlighted the involvement of MIC.

“There are over 8,000 Indian voters, and we are asking MIC to mobilise their machinery in collaboration with the leadership and members of the PKR,” he said.

The Election Commission (EC) has set the polling date for the Mahkota by-election on Sept 28, with the nomination day and early voting scheduled for Sept 14 and Sept 24 respectively.

The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.
