Public trust crisis in Umno never recovered - Noraini
The trust deficit was not something new and the number of seats won by Umno and BN in general elections has continued to decline.
FARAH SHAZWANI ALI , NURUL HUDA HUSAIN , NOR SYAMIRA LIANA NOR ASHAHA , NURATIKAH ATHILYA HASSANKUALA LUMPUR - The public's trust in Umno has never fully recovered since the largest Malay party was defeated for the first time after over six decades of governing the country in 2018.
Umno Women chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said this trust deficit was not something new and the number of seats won by Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) in general elections has continued to decline.
She said in the 13th general election (GE13), BN won 122 seats, but this number dropped to 79 seats in GE14 and further declined to only 30 seats in GE15.
"In the previous assembly, we debated extensively about the confusion or uncertainty in the post-GE15 political landscape.
"We are aware that the political scenario has changed and how we should navigate this new political environment. However, the fact remains that this confusion still exists.
"This confusion has led to open political disputes, tarnishing the face of democracy and causing investors to flee from our country.
"Our greatest fear is that this confusion has not only caused Umno to lose public trust but also trust among some party members," she said.
She said this during her keynote address at the 2024 Umno Women General Assembly at the World Trade Centre, here, today.
Also present were Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Noraini added that this assembly must mark the beginning of an end to the public trust crisis.
"We need to reform the country's political landscape to create a classic story for the future. The story of Umno rising again to rebuild its strength," she said.
