'Move beyond complementary role in Unity Government' - Dr Akmal

FARAH SHAZWANI ALI , NURUL HUDA HUSAIN , NOR SYAMIRA LIANA NOR ASHAHA , NURATIKAH ATHILYA HASSANKUALA LUMPUR - Umno's youth wing is determined to restore the party's dominance in Malaysian politics, mirroring its past glory as the leading Malay party.
Youth Chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said that the party's youth wing fully trusts President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to devise the best strategy to achieve this goal.
"We don't want Umno to remain comfortable as merely a complement in the Unity Government; instead, this party needs to become dominant again.
"We must work towards increasing Umno's number of seats and securing a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat," he said during his keynote speech at the Umno General Assembly (PAU) 2024 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today.
Meanwhile, reflecting on Umno's significant victory in the Nenggiri by-election Dr Akmal stressed that it demonstrates the party's ability to regain the trust of the people, particularly young voters.
"Many political observers may have seen labelling us as the underdog in Nenggiri.
"Even within Umno, there may have been doubts about our capabilities and potential.
"But as the youth, we approached this with full confidence, without any hesitation. We fought to win in our own way," he said.
He further stated that the victory in Nenggiri is evidence that the people still hold this revered Malay party in high regard.
"When the people recognise our sincerity and feel our genuine intentions, that’s when Umno truly finds a place in their hearts," he added.
