SHAH ALAM – A bustling afternoon erupted into chaos when a foreign man, believed to be involved in a string of robbery cases, was shot dead following a shootout with federal police in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya yesterday.
In a 52-second video making rounds on social media, a black MPV was seen reversing into two other vehicles as shouts were heard.
Several men with their faces covered were heard shouting for the others to take cover before four shots were fired, hitting the windshield of a car.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan reportedly said the incident occurred at about 7pm and the deceased, believed to be from Africa, was a suspect in several robberies.
Meanwhile, Federal police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said that the suspect was part of a larger robbery gang that had dozens of cases linked to them.
"The group is believed to be active within the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur area.
"We had information from our Kuala Lumpur counterparts and the case was worked with Selangor police while Bukit Aman coordinated the operation.
"During the incident, the suspect was instructed to stop but he refused. He then fired at police with two shots hitting a police car," he told reporters at the scene on Wednesday night.
Police also found a revolver used by the criminal.
The man's body was sent to Serdang Hospital for an autopsy.
The suspect, aged between late 30s and early 40s, is believed to have been in the country ‘for some time’.
Shuhaily said as of now, the police believed there were around 10 members of the group, but the number could be more or less.
On the group’s modus operandi, Shuhaily said that the group would offer online services such as selling jewelry or money changing.
They would meet victims at a hotel before bringing them to another location with a vehicle, and that is when other members would rob the victim.
Efforts to track down the rest of the group were ongoing.
