Childfree choice: Woman cites parental conflicts, readiness concerns

"Parents should raise their children sincerely, without expecting anything in return when they grow up. I don't want to be the kind of parent who places a burden on their child," she said.

SHAH ALAM - A woman decided not to have children due to the conflicts she faced with her parents.

Hamimah (a pseudonym), 27, said she made this decision even before marrying her husband and both of them agreed on it.

"I chose to be childfree because of the issues I experienced with my own parents. I don't like the idea of viewing children as investments for our old age as children are an amanah (trust).

"Parents should raise their children sincerely, without expecting anything in return when they grow up. I don't want to be the kind of parent who places a burden on their child," she said.

Hamimah added that she was not yet mentally, physically or financially ready to have children.

"Everyone has their own opinions. They can criticise us, but only we feel the burden.

"I pray that Allah opens my heart to have children with the sincere intention of caring for that trust and that my financial situation with my husband becomes more stable," she said.
