SHAH ALAM - Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom reflects on the unwavering spirit of national track cycling champion Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, describing him as a true fighter who never knows the meaning of giving up.

The 28-year-old cylist from Johor acknowledged the many achievements of his fellow cyclist, famously known as The Pocket Rocketman, on the international stage.

Shah Firdaus regarded Azizulhasni as an idol and role model for all national athletes to emulate.

“There’s nothing more to be said about his (Azizulhasni) successes and contributions. Words can’t express my feelings about what this man has accomplished.

“Our journey in the same arena allows me to witness firsthand and feel with my heart his struggles and sacrifices.

“His daily efforts and dedication to the sport he loves, and his dream of realizing Malaysia’s aspirations, inspire us all.

“He paved the way and instilled confidence in those of us below, proving that we can challenge the world.

“He steps forward and becomes the pillar of hope for the country, leading the fight on the battlefield,” Shah Firdaus wrote on Facebook.

Shah Firdaus is also determined to move forward, using the Paris Olympics as a stepping stone to conquer the world.

“The curtain has fallen on the Paris 2024 Olympics. It’s time to move forward, rest, and reset,” he said.

Amid the beautiful moments and bitter memories, Shah Firdaus understood that every beginning has an end, and he is ready to continue Azizulhasni’s legacy on the world stage.

“As is the way of the world, the banner of the fight will eventually be handed over to the next in line, and my turn will come sooner or later.

“After years together, I can say I know this great soul well. He has a heart that never gives up. As long as he hasn’t achieved something, he will keep trying.

“Even so, he knows what’s best for himself. I wish him all the best and hope he enjoys his precious time.

“The National Velodrome will always be open, waiting for the return of the one and only legend, Azizulhasni Awang,” he wrote.

Azizulhasni’s dream of gold was halted in the early rounds of the keirin event after his participation was disqualified for overtaking the pacer before the starting line.

Meanwhile, Shah Firdaus faced an unfortunate incident when he collided with Japanese rider Shinji Nakano in the keirin final, finishing in sixth place.
