Zuki’s contract ends Saturday, assigned new key role
The Prime Minister said Zuki's successor would be announced in the near future.
SHAH ALAM - Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali’s contract as Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) will end this Saturday and will not be renewed.
Instead, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Zuki will be assigned to a new important role to assist the government, although details were not disclosed.
"I am grateful that since my appointment (as Prime Minister), I have had the privilege of being supported by a crucial pillar of public service, Mohd Zuki. This assembly marks his last official event as KSN.
"He is not exactly retiring since he has other important duties beyond public service," Anwar said in his speech at the monthly assembly with staff of the Prime Minister's department, here, today.
Zuki as also present at the assembly.
Zuki was appointed as KSN on Dec 31, 2019 and retired on Aug, 10, 2022, before his contract was extended for another two years.
Meanwhile, Anwar praised Zuki as a figure in public service who has dedicated himself to the country, even having served under several different Prime Ministers previously.
"I take this opportunity to express my appreciation towards him. He has consistently performed his duties with remarkable professionalism.
"On my first day (as Prime Minister), his advice and recommendations were consistently the best for the public service and the country, including decisions regarding the Public Service Salary System (SSPA)," Anwar said.
He said Zuki never complained, even when called to work on weekends.
"He exemplifies a public servant who never appears weary or makes excuses but instead seeks solutions with the best answers possible.
"I don't intend to offer excessive praise, but this is simply the truth.
"Whenever there was an issue, I would call or text him directly and he would ensure that answers were provided as quickly as possible to assist me and the government in performing our duties," Anwar added.
Anwar added that the efficiency and professionalism of public servants were rarely reported by the media compared to their weaknesses.
"I and the government are fortunate because we often receive feedbacks on weaknesses, delays and leaks. It is true, we do not deny that.
"However, there is little recognition for public servants who not only work beyond the regular hours but also dedicate their entire efforts and energy to the nation and its people," he said.
Zuki, 62, who held a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Nanyang University, Singapore has previously served in the Finance Ministry, Education Ministry, Rural and Regional Development Ministry, Home Ministry and Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.
He has also served at the Istana Negara and the Prime Minister's Department and held positions as Sarawak's federal secretary and secretary-general of the Defence Ministry.
Meanwhile, when met by reporters afterwards, Anwar said Zuki's successor would be announced in the near future.
"There is no candidate yet, but the announcment will be made soon," he said.
