SHAH ALAM - The Paris 2024 Olympics' opening ceremony has stirred global outrage, with Bersatu's Dr Mahathir Mohd Rais calling on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to condemn the controversial depiction of the Last Supper featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) drag queens.

The ceremony, which was intended to showcase artistic expression, has instead provoked widespread outrage.

The portrayal of LGBT drag queens in a rendition of the Last Supper has raised significant concerns about the respect for religious traditions and the limits of artistic freedom.

According to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Federal Territories State Secretary, Anwar should denounce the performance, which he considered a blatant disregard for the sanctity of religious symbols.

"This is more than a mere artistic misstep; it is viewed as a violation of the respect traditionally afforded to religious sentiments on the global stage.

“This issue is even more pressing for families, particularly those with young children.

"There is growing concern about the values and messages conveyed through such a prestigious platform as the Olympics," Mahathir said in a statement today.

He highlighted that parents are increasingly worried about exposing their children to content that might conflict with the religious teachings and values they aim to impart.

Mahathir also expressed frustration over the perceived inaction from the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) government.

"There should be no hesitation in defending the sanctity of religious traditions.

"The portrayal of religious symbols in ways perceived as mockery or promoting paganism is deeply troubling," he added.

He urged Malaysia to clarify its position, claiming that disrespect disguised as art or entertainment is unacceptable on the international stage.

"We are eagerly awaiting a strong statement from Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, condemning these actions and ensuring that our values are represented and respected worldwide,” he added.
