SHAH ALAM - A 16-year-old basketball player from Perlis died a week after fainting during a warm-up session for a friendly match.

According to the online news portal Weird Kaya, Chan Wei Yu collapsed on July 3 and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

He was diagnosed with a ruptured brain vessel and spent a week in the intensive care unit (ICU) before passing away.

"According to a Facebook post by the basketball club, Wei Yu died on July 10 at 6.44pm at home, surrounded by his family.

"His funeral was held on July 14 at his family home in Perlis. Wei Yu was the fourth of five sons of Chan Guang Ming, a 56-year-old coach of the state basketball team," read the article.

According to Oriental Daily, Wei Yu was diagnosed with a ruptured brain vessel, likely caused by a congenital arteriovenous malformation, which resulted in a brain hemorrhage.

Despite the tragic loss, Chan’s father finds solace in believing that his obedient and loving son will continue to watch over his family and friends from another world.

Chan, a standout player for the Perlis United Club, had recently represented the state in the national Under-17 basketball tournament held in Kuala Lumpur in May.
