KUALA SELANGOR - The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has agreed to take legal action based on constitutional provisions against six former Members of Parliament and state assemblymen who have declared their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Selangor Bersatu Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said that the party would not ‘give up’ even though the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul and the Selangor state legislative assembly Speaker Lau Weng San have violated the Federal and state constitutions.

"We will drag them to court to be judged by the judiciary.

"I believe the court will make the best decision based on the constitution and the law," he said during his speech at the People's Assembly to Protest the Decision of the Parliamentary Speaker at a hotel here on Sunday night.

He said that the judicial review was conducted to ensure that they vacate their seats and return the mandate to the people for by-elections.

"To (Tanjong Karang MP) Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi, if you have any self-respect, please vacate this seat before the court makes a decision.

"You won because of the people and the machinery that worked and helped you, but when given a bit of power, you betrayed the party.

"You did not uphold the people's trust, so it is our responsibility to bring you to justice," he said.

Azmin, who is also the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Selangor Chairman, emphasised that the Federal and Selangor state governments faced a severe constitutional crisis.

"Our responsibility is to defend the constitution and uphold the laws of the country and state.

"But what is happening is that some Members of Parliament, ADUNs (State Legislative Assemblies), including the Speakers of the Dewan Rakyat and DUN, are not guardians of the constitution but have violated it and made decisions contrary to the laws of the country and the state of Selangor," he explained.

He added that the Federal and Selangor state governments had violated the law just to ensure they remained in power.

"The people across the country need to rise because if the government does not adhere to the rule of law, how can the people expect justice and protection?

"What this government is doing contradicts the constitution and the law," added Azmin.

Previously, six former Bersatu Members of Parliament who declared their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim retained their positions as representatives.

Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed that this was informed by Johari through a letter dated July 10.

The following day, Lau announced that there was no unexpected vacancy for the Selat Klang state assembly seat held by Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari.

He said that the termination of the Selat Klang state assembly's membership in Bersatu was found to be a premeditated expulsion under Article LXVA 2(c) of the Selangor State Constitution.
