SHAH ALAM - Bayan Baru member of parliament Sim Tze Tzin has urged the Chinese community to consider marriage following a decrease in marriage rates from 2016 to 2022.

In a Facebook post, Sim raised concerns over the decreasing marriage rates, especially among the Chinese community.

"I am happy to see the marriage rate among Bumiputra is on the rise with 47 per cent increase, Indian Community marriage rate is steady (from) 2016-2022.

"However, the Chinese community marriage rate has declined 33 per cent from 2016 to 2022 which records quite a huge decline," he said.

Sim said several factors affected marriage decisions such as financial concerns, finding a suitable partner and focus on a career.

"I hope to draw attention to Chinese communities to pay attention to this declining trend.

"I agree that marriage is an individual choice but it will cause other chain effects such as declining fertility rates.

"So, for those who have yet to get married regardless of race, I want to say 'Kahwinlah' (please marry)," he said.

This is the second time Sim has highlighted his concern over the declining marriage and birth rate among the Malaysian Chinese community.
