Sg Bakap polls: Elderly couples cast their votes, remind youth to fulfill responsibilities
“It would be a waste not to vote when you have the chance."
NIBONG TEBAL — Married for decades, an elderly couple arrived together at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Duri voting centre to fullfill their responsibilities in choosing the next assemblyman for the Sungai Bakap constituency.
Housewife Hasnah Arpan, 68, who was pushing her husband in a wheelchair due to his weakened legs, said they were not accustomed to going individually.
Her husband, Mohd Shadzi Said, 71, a former worker at the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), addressed issues raised by the current government, such as the past debts often highlighted by the administration.
“I have no concerns about the current government except for the people's financial state. The government must lower the prices of goods, especially for those with low household incomes,” he said.
He further stressed the importance of young people being interested in politics as Malaysian citizens.
“It would be a waste not to vote when you have the chance,” he added.
The couple have seven children, some of whom were also voting in the Sg Bakap by-election.
Another elderly couple was seen at the polling station fulfilling their civic duty.
Yeoh Bakooy, 83, a retired worker and his wife, Lao Siew Hiang, 79, said they came to vote together to practice their civic responsibility.
The retired couple, who currently depend on their Employee Provident Fund (EPF) for financial support, mentioned that all their four children have moved out and are working.
