Witnesses describe terrifying escape from Genting Highlands theme park fire
Photos and video clips of the fire went viral on social media earlier today.
KUALA LUMPUR - Witnesses of the fire at a theme park in Genting Highlands this afternoon described their panic as they saw the raging fire spread across the building, causing them to fear it was about to collapse, and the thick smoke that enveloped the surrounding area.
Tourist Hafiz Abdul Halim, 42, who was with his wife said they felt fear when they realised that there was a fire at the two-storey building at the theme park.
"We obviously panicked when we heard people screaming here and there. The police on duty did ask people to evacuate the premises and exit to safer locations,” he told Bernama here today.
Restaurant assistant Adrian Wong, 32, shared that the staff there as well as visitors were asked to vacate the building when the fire happened.
"Everyone made it out. They vacated and left everything to save themselves. Actually, the fire occurred on the first floor of the building, but for safety purposes, we were asked to leave,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Dr Wan Mohamad Zaidi Wan Isa said the fire had been completely put out.
"The fire was under control at 6.30pm. No victims were involved in this incident,” he said in a statement today, while Bentong district police chief Supt Zaiham Mohd Kahar confirmed the fire when contacted by Bernama today but chose not to elaborate further.
