Nine out of 10 Malaysians face sleep problems
The data was collected from a nationwide survey involving 212 respondents last January.
SHAH ALAM - Nine out of ten people or 87.2 per cent of Malaysians experience sleep problems, including insomnia, frequent waking or difficulty falling asleep.
A study published by Malaysian sleep leader Sonno shared that the data was collected from a nationwide survey involving 212 respondents last January.
According to Sonno, difficulty sleeping was identified as a common problem affecting 39.9 per cent of respondents, while frequent waking (37.9 per cent) and snoring (28.9 per cent) also exacerbated the sleep crisis in Malaysia.
"For different sleep durations, a significant portion of respondents, 45.5 per cent, reported getting between seven to nine hours of sleep, aligning with global sleep recommendations.
"However, 52.1 per cent struggle with shorter sleep durations, ranging from four to six hours. This highlights a concerning trend towards sleep deprivation," the statement read.
Meanwhile, the survey also revealed that sleep problems were equally prevalent among men and women, with 87.7 per cent and 86.4 per cent respectively.
It noted that adults aged 25 to 44 years showed lower sleep quality at night compared to those aged 45 to 64 years.
"Additionally, 76.3 per cent of respondents agreed that sufficient and quality sleep significantly contributes to better quality of life, productivity, and mental health.
"Furthermore, 84.6 per cent of the 212 respondents stated that they use screens just before sleeping every night or most nights and 61 per cent admitted that screen use before bed affects sleep quality," it said.
Sonno's CEO Fabio Miceli said that sleep quality impacted an individual's daily functioning and mental well-being.
"We intend to use this data to collaborate with health authorities and organisations to find more effective solutions," Fabio said.
