Child sexual crime cases increase every year

It is at an alarming level and needs attention.

SHAH ALAM - The escalating trend of child sexual abuse within families is raising serious concerns in our nation, particularly as it has shown a steady increase over the past four years.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation, Sexual, Women and Children's Investigation Division (D11) deputy director Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan revealed that statistics showed that a total of 2,722 cases recorded since 2020.

She said the case covers the crime of rape, incest, sexual harassment, unnatural sex, pornography, sexual communication, physical and non-physical sexual abuse.

"The highest number recorded was last year, which was 766 cases compared to 459 cases in 2020.

For this year, as far as four months until last April, a total of 268 cases were reported," she told Sinar on Tuesday.

Commenting on the crime of paedophilia, Siti Kamsiah said that the group has a very high sexual stimulation towards children who have not reached puberty and usually refers to the age of under 13 regardless of whether it is male or female.

"There are several main causes that have been identified as triggers for how the individual is caught in sexual stimulation of children.

"First, a person may naturally have the nature and instincts of such sexual tendencies, in addition to past historical factors that have been sexual victims of adults to form such instincts.

"It is also possible that the activities of a person who likes to watch child porn videos, self-formation is influenced so that there is an attraction and forms such behaviour," she said.
