Thrifting is a fantastic option and people might be surprised by the brands they can find.
SHARIFAH SHAHIRAHSHAH ALAM – Attention, savvy shoppers and treasure hunters!
Today, we're diving into the fascinating world of thrifting, where old becomes gold and pre-loved items find new homes full of love and appreciation.
But hold onto your hats because this is not just any thrifting adventure – we're shining a spotlight on two fashion icons - Nabilah Nordin and Andrea Wong!
If you haven't heard of them yet, prepare to be inspired. They are not your average thrifters; these trendsetters have turned thrifting into an art form, effortlessly blending style, sustainability, and savings like pros.
Whether it is scoring vintage gems or breathing new life into forgotten fashion, they have the magic touch.
At Sinar Daily's women's networking event, ‘She Leads 2’, seasoned fashion stylist Wong and acclaimed makeup artist Nabilah shared their insights on the theme “Dressing Right & Feeling Good.”
The event, held on May 7 at the Karangkraf Auditorium centred around uncovering the tips and tricks to fashion and makeup as well as sustainable fashion.
From uncovering hidden gems in dusty racks to mastering the art of upcycling, they have a knack for turning every thrift store visit into a treasure hunt you won't soon forget.
During the event, Nabilah shared her advice, suggesting trying something different from the usual approach.
She emphasised starting with colours to save time and effort.
Nabilah has a unique method of thrifting to cut down on time spent browsing.
She knows her preferred set of colours, so when she shops, she focuses on those.
“I will pick up items in colours that will look good on me before checking out the size and cut of the piece. This saves me so much time,” she said.
For those unsure about colour choices, Nabilah suggests starting with colours that suit most people, such as navy blue, emerald green, dark teal blue, burgundy, dark purple, and charcoal brown.
Nabilah believes that thrifting is a fantastic option, and people might be surprised by the brands they can find.
“However, when thrifting, you will need to dig deep and explore. Thrifting is like a treasure hunt, and with a good start, people can uncover pieces that are sometimes even decades old but still in great condition,” she added.
Meanwhile, Wong highlighted thrifting is essential as it is a fashion rotation, not accumulation.
“I personally love to shop at second-hand stores and go thrifting.
“However, while people can find excellent basic pieces through thrift shopping, it requires skills,” she said.
Wong added that those who are new to fashion should begin with the right basics and start building their capsule wardrobe first.
“Having a strong foundation is crucial for every wardrobe. Once you have built a wardrobe filled with staple items that can be worn repeatedly, they can then add seasonal or trendy pieces on top of that foundation,” she said, and this is where thrifting comes in handy.
To build a capsule wardrobe, Wong said one needs to invest in quality pieces.
“They do not have to be extravagant like high-end brands such as Prada however there are many mid-range affordable luxury options available,” she said.
