SHAH ALAM - Selangor has recorded the highest number of sexual crimes in the country over the past three years.

The recorded cases include molestation, incest, unnatural offences, child pornography and sexual communication.

Federal police Sexual, Women and Children's Investigation Division (D11) deputy director Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan said the statistics were based on its high population compared to other states.

"Selangor's proximity to several states such as Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang is one of the contributors to these crimes, followed by Johor.

"Easy internet network access, numerous facilities, population density and economic factors contribute to the increase in sexual crime rates," she said.

She stated this after a dialogue session with the community at the Selangor Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) here on Wednesday.

Siti Kamsiah said that most of the recorded cases involve locals, about 90 per cent.

"However, there are also cases involving foreigners.

She clarified that most sexual crimes involve perpetrators known to the victims.

"Anyone can be a potential predator; most perpetrators are known to the victims, either family members, friends or individuals entrusted with trust such as teachers.

"However, sexual offenders are difficult to identify based solely on appearance or character traits and can easily gain the victim's trust," she said.

Siti Kamsiah said the B40 group was among the highest involved in these sexual crimes based on the recorded statistics during the respective period.

"We see overall that due to the unstable economic conditions of this group, combined with factors like unemployment and lack of education.

"These economic aspects contribute to emotional stress and impact emotional relationships and parenting," she said.
