Clarify pro-Israel professor lecturer’s presence, ex minister tells UM
SHAH ALAM - Former foreign minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah urges Universiti Malaya (UM) to come forward and clarify the presence of pro-Israel professor, Bruce Gilley, as an invited lecturer to the university.
He said Gilley is a Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs at the University of Portland.
"Gilley's statement touches on the stance of the Malaysian people and government since ancient times. We clearly oppose Israel's genocide and support the Palestinian people's struggle.
"In this matter, we do not know who the organiser is. So, I urge UM to come forward to explain about the ICS Seminar programme: Reassessing Republican China," he said on Wednesday.
The sharing uploaded by Bruce Gilley also drew criticism from users of application X when he stated that politicians in this country were advocating a second Holocaust against the Jews.
Saifuddin added that the explanation was important to prevent other speculations from arising.
"Today, many students and lecturers in the United States (US) are suspended and arrested by the police for organising camps in support of Palestine.
"There are university leaderships there (us) that are oppressive by calling the police to arrest their own students and lecturers. But when this happens at UM, it is very ironic.
"I want a clear explanation first, before I make further comments," he said firmly.
