Despite stance, MCA expected to back Unity Government candidate in KKB - Analyst
PM urged to mediate between MCA and DAP amid election tensions
SHAH ALAM - Despite MCA's official stance of non-participation in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, the party is expected to support the Unity Government's candidate out of respect for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Political analyst from Universiti Utara Malaysia Professor Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed interpreted MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong’s declaration as a response to earlier statements from DAP leadership.
"While MCA has taken a formal position, the broader interests of the Unity Government are likely to guide their actual involvement in the campaign.
"I expect cooperation between MCA and the Unity Government to take place because it takes into account the Prime Minister's view that all coalitions should work together," he said on Wednesday.
Sinar Harian had earlier reported that Wee was firm in his decision not to involve MCA in the campaign, potentially complicating efforts for DAP candidates.
This was in response to DAP’s Nga Kor Ming’s remarks, which called on Barisan Nasional (BN) to reciprocate Pakatan Harapan's (PH) support, which contributed to an Umno victory in last year’s Pelangai state by-election.
To address the emerging tensions between MCA and DAP, Ahmad suggests that Anwar should convene a meeting with the leaders of both parties.
“Given the significant roles of MCA, DAP, and MIC in the Unity Government, it’s crucial for Anwar to ensure unity within the coalition, particularly as it becomes a focal point in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election," he added.
